Inner Forestay

Post by Long Dogs »

Is anyone using an inner forestay and a working jib? Just trying to work out where an inner forestay should attach.

Inner forestay

Post by yoty »

Hi, yes - I am. I attach the Clew of the sail to the starboard side of the bow-roller and have a second halyard rove through a block just below the forestay mounting. I also mounted sliders on the coach-roof to give some adjustment if necessary. I'm using a rope halyard at present led back to one of the winches but as initial trials have worked well so I'll probably go the whole hog and have a wire halyard and Highfield lever to get the tension right.

The bow fitting is tight with the existing headsail furler very close but there is just enough room. I did consider taking a short wire strop down inside the anchor well and modifying the 'U' bolt mounting of the recovery ring to take the load but ultimately didn't have to. Its another option. I'll take photos if you want them.

Cheers

Hi Barry

Great news, I'm not alone :)

How have you attached the clew? Directly or with a short line? Is the sail only attached at the the clew and head? Have you added something to the mast for the new halyard?

Have you (or anyone else for that matter) got a loop deck fitting to the rear of the anchor locker? Could this be strong enough to attach an inner forestay? Would it give enough length for the luff?

Hi, The jib is attached at the clew by a single twisted (90) shackle. I already had a sheave in the mast so just rove a 6mm pre-stretched multiplat line through it which then comes through the mast and exits about a foot above the deck and then via blocks to the winch. When I fit the wire halyard I intend to fit a highfield lever at the base of the mast.

I see. So is that the spinnaker halyard you're using or is that lower still?

Forestay

Hi,

No, the spinnaker halyard exits the mast above the fixed forestay, my additional halyard exits below the fixed forestay.

Sorry, yes. I meant the spinnaker pole uphaul.

But that's probably far too low so you must have one more hole in your mast than me so to speak.

Hi, Yes - I have a sheave in the mast which on a conventional rig would take the Headsail halyard.

The pole uphaul is much lower and is external.
