Pure Genius

Pure Genius (Swift 18) was wrecked by storm Brian 21.10.2017. She was on her mooring (shallowish but not drying) at Parkstone, Poole and at about 1130 am (when the ships clock stopped) she rolled over and the mast broke off at the tabernacle. A crane was needed to recover her and right her. After pumping out she floated very well with all the rigging hanging off the side – a very sad sight! There was so much damage that it was uneconomic to repair. An inspection was made of the rigging and the shrouds and backstay were intact. The forestay (two years old) bottom thread was bent and broken - probably after the mast went down.
Thinking about it since then, I can only think that the welding on the tabernacle failed, causing the mast to drop and surprisingly made the boat capsize.
So fellow Swift owners – check your tabernacles and consider extra strengthening.
A year later I bought a replacement Swift 18 – Tyger. She is a great little boat and a worthy replacement for Pure Genius.
