Hi on havoc the topping lift goes from the back of the boom up to a pully on the thing that sticks out from the top of the mast backwards then OUTSIDE the mast to a cleat, the rope is lead behind the spreaders. Never had any trouble.

Im a late commer into the fray, but here my way to a partial solution. Phil is right the setup of the mast is critical, I have a tapered mast on Havoc some boats have a continuous diameter masts which could be diferent, so I make sure the standing rigging is TIGHT with rake, I recommend buyig a mast...
