Check List when buying a second-hand Swift 18

Post by AFG » Mon Mar 23, 2009 10:45 am

Andy is revamping the website and will add my check list to the downloads section then. In the meantime, quite a few people have asked to see the information I gathered when buying Swift 079 with my friend Hugh, so here it is...

The info came from this website and talking to those who've known the boat for years and been involved in the original Swift Owners Association.

The info is offered without warranty, so if you buy a boat using this document to help you and it falls apart, it's nothing to do with me! You are also free to disagree with what's in there and/or pass on your thoughts on the subject...

Cheers,

Tony G

Cheers Tony, I think its a really useful document, I wish it had been around when I was buying my boat!

This is great, Rondonay scores well. I'll keep it for reference.

I agree, very useful, I think I need a Working Jib & a Cruising Chute, otherwise Vega ticks all the boxes!
Rob
ps. Does anyone use both a Genny & a Working jib, & if so do you change on the water or decide its 'windy' before venturing out?

Working Jib / Genoa

Post by Elwyn Williams » Tue Mar 24, 2009 7:42 pm

Have swapped whilst underway, Providing at least 2 people know what they are doing no major problem as Sheets are routed differently anyway. Takes about 20-30 secs if all prepared first

How do you rig the sheets & halyard for additional heada

Post by AFG » Tue Mar 24, 2009 8:53 pm

I'd be very interested to know how the sheets and halyards are arranged for a working jib cruising chute and even kite. Samphire doesn't have any of these at the moment and we are thinking about how everything would work if we were to set up (say) a chute and working jib.

yes i'm also wondering about getting a working jib (partly because my large genoa creates such a big blindspot)

Check list

Post by Ed » Thu Apr 23, 2009 6:34 pm

The check list looks great, I will be off to Rutland his weekend to check around Webley! s177

Although reading the list I'm pretty sure I'll not see anything to worry about.
I didn't check things like the foam infill's when I bought her......

I've thought a few time about using a jib for when the Genoa has more than one or two rolls in it, the centre of effort seems to high and adds to much to the heel of the boat.

Hi Ed

I may be sailing on Rutland Water this week end - Sunday? so if I see you out there I'll wave. I've always thought Webley was a nice looking boat so its nice to make contact.

Excellent ! I am pleased that 'Candes' passes the test. I will keep a copy for any prospective buyers to use when they view the boat.

No, none of the Marlin International 400-series Swifts had black toe-rails (those were mid-Honnor Marine boats), but all moulded-in toe-rails as introduced in the late Honnor Marine period.
