A Frame anyone?

Post by Rondonay » Fri Jun 01, 2007 9:14 pm

I looked at the Library info on A frames. I don't really want to make a wooden frame and a single spinnaker pole looked a bit unstable. What other experiences have members had with the A Frame issue?

Quick & Cheap A Frame

Post by Rondonay » Sun Sep 09, 2007 10:48 pm

Hi,

After some thought, I have made an experimental A frame which worked well when we tested it.
I cut two lengths of aluminium coated metal tubing, 225 cms each and threaded a length of chain through. I attached the middle to the forestay bottle screw with shackles and the ends to the toe-rail by the first stanchion on each side with carabiner clips.

At present I am protecting the ends where the pressure runs to the deck with small purpose made rope mats temporarily fixed in place with Duck tape, this may develop into a fixed padding but at present it works well enough to do the job.

On my boat there are 2 ‘U’ boats either side of the mast and I’ve often wondered what they were for. I noticed the same bolts on Simon’s boat ‘Arabesque’ and he said he thought they were for fixing a purpose built ‘A’ frame to. Looking at the gallery, on the few boats that show the area concerned, I can’t see them. Do many other boats have these bolts and do their owners have different ideas about what there used for?

A Frame anyone?

Terry,
On our boat Windsong, these U bolts are either side of the mast but slightly
further aft. Ours were used by a previous owner to attach blocks for Storm
Jib sheets to be led back to the cockpit. Can you supply a photo to confirm
?

Cheers

Steve

Will do at the next opportunity, The weathers a bit wild up here at the moment and I'm working so it might be a week or so before I can get back on board. If fact next time I do it will probably be to bring Seren home for the season. (boo hoo)

A frame

Post by joe_swift18 » Fri Sep 21, 2007 9:50 am

I use 2 pieces of 1"x1" wood a little less than 8 foot long, lightly tied to the toe rail at the stanchions nearest the mast foot. I have a block at the top of the A frame and at the bow sprit and I think it's 4 to 1 purchase. I lift the mast by hand and take the strain with the A frame. I keep the mast from moving sideways in the tabernacle by hand. I've raised and lowered the mast singlehanded on land and water about 5 times now and have no difficulty with this system.

I use a similar system but think 1” x 1” a bit on the thin side (what would happen if they broke?) I erect the mast with the boat on the trailer and tie off the bows to the trailer winch stanchion. I then use the winch to hoist the mast. I feel much more in control of things by doing it this way especially when lowering single handed.
