Sugar scoop forestay conversion

Post by ianandtracey » Thu Nov 08, 2012 11:08 pm

Im looking at the purchase of a swift which has the old style forestay deck fixings.
Ive read the reports of the older boats having a problem, presumably its a weak design????
Does anybody know if these older boats can be converted to the sugar scoop design and where it can be purchased from.????

We owned our 1984 build Swift 18 purchased in 1991 for 20 years and never had any problems with the as manufactured non sugarscoop forstay attachment and never heard of anyone else having problems. We no longer own a Swift 18 but have very fond memories of this great trailer sailer.
All the best with finding a nice cared for example.

Same for me. My 1984 Swift has the rolastay forestay and I have had no problems with furling either. The only issu I have imagined? Is that the forestay always seems to be bowed in use. I can’t get it to look taut enough.

Sugar scoop forestay conversion

AFG posted a 'checklist when buying' in the for sale section. item 3 says earlier boats had a problem with the forestay fixing. Looks like i might be looking into every detail too much. Thanks for passing on your experience. i might have been narrowing my search a wee bit too much.

The key to this issue seems to be the tensioning of the backstay.
