Outboard Motor Vibrations

Post by LittleCracker » Sat Jul 30, 2011 9:34 am

I've just fitted a 4hp 4stroke Yamaha outboard to "Little Cracker" - it's tight fit, but just fits in ok. Trouble is there's a lot of vibration, especially at higher revs.

I've fitted a folded rubber car mat under the motor, and lined the cover with carpet underfelt, both of which help a little, but any expert tips on how to further reduce would help - makes conversation in the cockpit very difficult!

Best wishes to all "Swifties" and hope for a better (Warmer) season to come.

Outboard Motor Vibrations

From SNIPE
I have an early Yamaha 4 2 stroke motor which is excellent but I find
it best to run with the lid off and only use it to shelter the motor on
the mooring. I found that it was the lid which caused most of the
noise.

Outboard Motor Vibrations

Post by Rondonay » Sun Jul 31, 2011 4:23 pm

Hi
The lid vibrates a lot so we put a pad under its edge, between it and the stern locker for security, this reduces the noise a lot!
PS We are heading for the boat on Tuesday.

outboard vibration

Post by nickf » Sun Jul 31, 2011 9:18 pm

I have a Suzuki DF5 -4Stroke.The boat engine cover wont fit over the engine so I use it with the cover off.

My stern lockers vibrated badly so I "bosticked" some strips of 2mm thick upholstery rubber webbing where the lid edges rest on the ledges
This type of ruuber takes the weight if you sit or stand on them and do not obviously raise the lid level above the seating area.
They have remained in position for 4 years

Thanks for your speedy and informative responses - very much appreciated. I have now greatly improved the situation by insulating the transom with a rubber car mat folded four times (ie two thicknesses each side of the transom), and not tightening the plate screws too tightly. Still not brilliant but much better.

Thanks again!
