Swift 18 Owners

After a hard weekend's sailing I have found a couple of yards of what seems to be thin red plastic string hanging out of the slot where the main halyard emerges from the mast. Does anyone know what this is for (I am guessing it was used for threading a bigger rope up through the mast), and what I can do to get it back where it should be?
