Re: want to buy a swift 18 - need your opinion

At a displacement of around 650k (when weighed many are a good bit more) swifts are light but not that light for a micro cupper. Veel groeten Cris Hebben jullie kijken (oh dear, must go into English) at the (British) Swift website - http://www.swift18.org/ It has useful info with a copy of the origi...

Hi Cris, Expect to pay around £4500 for a good boat (£5000 for a very good one.) Marlin International was the last firm to produce Swifts. I don’t know what the going rate for a new boat was when production ceased in the nineties; however, I understand that a firm called boat4fun have acquired the m...

In your case you may very well be right . My mooring does all sorts of strange things to my boat; quite often it faces the opposite direction to every other boat in the straits. Quite tricky knowing which direction to approach when returning after a sail. regards Terry Thanks for you help on this .....

Hi David I keep Seren on a swing mooring on the Menai Straits which can be subject to strong wind over tide situations. I've always kept my rudder up on the basis that in strong winds the boat will lie head to wind but I've never seen how it behaves with it down. I think the rudder, and in particula...

Re: RUDDER BLADE

Hi Mike, Swings & Roundabouts, Norfolk = Sunny but expensive V Wales = Free slipways but rainy (well some anyway). Hi, the rudder stock has just a lenth of s/s rod as the main pivot. Make sure you get the right size.!! Mine is a bit thicker, as it was free,! and in case I wanted to sail across the a...

Hi Dave My rudder stock pin sounds the same as yours but didn't have a hole in. I found that it used to slowly work its way out. After almost losing my rudder I drilled a small hole just under the top hinge and put a split pin through. Hi all ..i was checking my boat last night and found that the ro...

Re: Leaky Keel Box

Hi Geof, At the moment the North Wales Swift regatta was/is a bit tongue in cheek, the 5 of us + dog met up last year and so we called it a regatta. Although If we do make a date I'm sure you would be more than welcome (and anyone else for that matter.) Hello ‘Scuse the curiosity, but when’s the ‘No...

Hi Gary, funny you should mention the screw holes. In fact water wasn't leaking that way but was leaching through the bottom of the cover and (I think) then finding it's way thought cracks around the keelbox and collecting under the floor. The fact that it fooled me into taking the keel off, well wh...

Hi Pauline, You'll be pleased to know that Seren's safely back down on her trailer. The pile of wobbly bricks was actually a bit more stable than it looked but it was still a bit scary. I did some repairs but nothing that I could say that was definitely the problem. I pushed the keel box with a car ...

Leaky Keel Box

Following a good early start to the season Seren has had to come out for some serious maintenance. After getting a small amount of water on the cabin soul, whenever we heel too far, I put the problem down to rubber keel bolt washers. Replacing them, if anything, just made matters worse. Then I spott...

In praise of bearing savers

I have to admit, I was not that convinced that they were going to work and the problem is, once I’d fitted them they didn’t look that easy to get off! Consequently they have remained on for the past three and a half years. It was only when the brakes seized on that I was forced to investigate. These...

Hi Simon
Yes, I priced him up last year but got a better price on line. May be it pays to buy local! He is the guy I had in mind to get it serviced. I hope he's forgotten that I didn't buy from him.
See you Sunday, Terry

PS. I'm having to sneek up on my computer to make a broadband connection
