129 Aries refurbished and heading to windermere this weekend
On our Swift 18 SNIPE we hoist the mast with the boat on the trailer using the trailer winch attached to the bottom of the forestay. It requires on crew on the winch and the other lifting the mast and steadying it and watching that the shroud turnbuckles don’t capsize. From: gff_cook ( forum-launc...

Outboard Motor Vibrations
From SNIPE I have an early Yamaha 4 2 stroke motor which is excellent but I find it best to run with the lid off and only use it to shelter the motor on the mooring. I found that it was the lid which caused most of the noise. ----Original Message---- From: forum-outboards@swift18.org Date: 30/07/201...

Help required - forestay and roller reefing
I think that some sailors may be unaware of the dangers of having a weakened forestay. If the forestay breaks, the mast will crash down and possibly pole-axe the helm. Having had one break on my Hunter F1, I am ultra careful as it resulted in the mast snapping in two as it hit the hatch cover. Fortu...

New engine required
To clarify the Mercury 4/5 hp differences, I think that it is more likely that the choke size of the carburettor would be increased as well as the jets, so don't try mucking about with them! It is worth using Shell V-Power fuel in both 2 strokes and 4 strokes. Much cleaner running and easier startin...

Main Sheet Traveller
My own experience with a traveller rail athwart the coskpit is that it is more trouble than it is worth. My Hunter F1 had a traveller and the only time it was ever used was to bring the boom up to windward when sailing in very light airs. The kicker was capable of doing whatever else was required. O...

One of the attractions of the Swift 18 is the inboard well for the outboard and it is much safer for use in a seaway. My only problem with SNIPE has been vibration from the 4HP Mariner, a very old unit but in perfect working order and condition. My last boat was a Hunter F1 which had a transom mount...

I used a parallelogram swinging bracket on the stern of my Hunter F1. I used to fit a 4HP Mercury for cruising, and a lovely Yamaha Malta when preparing to race This arrangement was not satisfactory for motor-sailing because of the depth changes when heeling. The Yamaha was very light and easy to rem...

SNIPE came with a rather dishevelled Mariner 4 which had stood unused on the transom for about 7 years. Once cleaned up and given a general service, it ran beautifully but is by no means quiet and it makes the whole boat vibrate at cruising revs. I'm considering using hard rubber pads to insulate be...
