Gosport

It was great to meet the crew of TARIM 2 at Gosport the other day (22nd August). I was crewing on a friend's boat rather than on my Swift Redbug which I hope to be 'reunited' with soon! We left early the next morning and made it all the way to Eastbourne which we were very pleased about. I hope you ...

On mine, the genoa halyard is 13 metres and the main was 16 metres when cleated to mast, but I replaced with 20 metres so it could be led back to the cockpit & some to spare. Both 8mm braided polyester.

It's well worth checking out other possible causes of leaks such as deck fittings and windows before you go to a lot of effort. I sometimes find that a little bit of water has weeped in around the keel bolt, I'll disassemble it and add some more grease next time it's on the trailer - could the same ...

Could I also ask has anybody fitted a transom mounted bracket for the outboard ? So the well can be faired in with dinghy bailers for self bailing. If so what make ? I've fitted a lifting transom mount bracket (sorry I don't know the make, but it is a fairly standard design) for a Yamaha 2.5. Defini...

Slightly off-topic, but I happily use a 2.5hp yamaha to get in & out of harbour and hoist the sails as soon as possible. It can push the boat through the water at about 4kts as long as the hull is clean! It's a nice light engine, starts easily and is economical on fuel. I agree that a more powerful ...

Following up from my previous post last September... I bit the bullet in the autumn and got a good deal for a new furling genoa from Crusader Sails made to 'original' dimensions they had on record plus measurements from my boat. I have been very pleased with the sail, it has been just right for the ...

I don't know how much the keel weighs, but I do know that the winding hole is just above the static waterline, so a good blob of grease will be a sufficient seal. Any good waterproof grease should do the job. To prevent excess grease finding its way into the cabin I use a jam-jar lid as a cover for ...

I can report that the rope-stopper beads threaded onto the halliard above the shackle are still doing a reasonable job in preventing wrap after several months use :)

Genoa size

I think my genoa may be a bit oversize (for coastal sailing at least) as I frequently need 3-5 rolls of furling to keep the boat balanced in say Force 3-4. Measurements are Luff 6.05m leech 5.80m foot 3.35m and PD 3.15m making it 134% overlap (J=2.35m) Does anyone know how these measurements compare...

Thank you for that Rob, I have the later type so I shall have another go at fitting the halliard diverter when the mast is next down (not keen on bosuns chair method suggested in the manual!)

Halliard wrap

I've experienced some difficulties with furling & unfurling the genoa due to halliard wrap at the top of the rotating foil caused by the narrow angle between the halliard and the forestay I've tried a number of solutions, but none of them are perfect... 1) Attach a downhaul line to the halliard to p...

I measured Redbug's mast over winter and it was 8.1m excluding windex etc, so that tallies with the comments above.
