Re: Flooded boat and now foam buoyancy tanks full of water HELP

I have similar flooding problems. The big question is how is water getting into, mine is through a hole in the skeg. My approach to the cure was first to find the leak in in inner molding, there were many but most only appeared when sailing. Eventually I installed a hoselock fitting into the partiti...

Re: Keel repair kit

As I was beginning to find the keel lifting mechanism on my Swift18 increasingly difficult I gave the subject some thought and built a box on the rear end of my keel box. This acted as the base for a trailer winch which I bolted under the step with the drive shaft going through into the cockpit allo...

Re: Keel pins snapped

My trailer has a sub frame with the wheels attached and the boat is carried on the main frame. To work on the keel i loosen the bolts attaching the sub frame to the main frame, jack up the trailer until the wheels are free, put in 4 axle stands for security and wheel the wheels out of the way. I the...

Re: Keel repairs

Having reached the age when scrabbling on my knees to raise the keel is a pest, I decided to use a trailer winch which I fitted on the bridge deck under the step into the cabin. I cut a hole in the top of the keel box and built up a support with an inspection plate included and then led a 1200 kg dy...

outboard well

Hi Steve, The mod. is a bit awkward but do-able and works with a short shaft engine. It enables the engine to be lifted clear of the water for sailing or mooring. First measure your engine leg length and compare it with the distance from the mounting point to the stern of the boat to see whether it ...

Outboards and salt water

I extended my well by cutting out the bottom of the boat to the transom. My short shaft Yamaha Malta now swings up clear of the water. I also strengthened the transom in case I had weakened the boat. It works ok with a small engine . John. From: pmasters ( forum-general@swift18.org ) Sent: ‎18/‎...

Rudder and Stock

Hi Hibbo, I've tried to send details but the forum mail box was full. If you send me your email address I'll send them direct. I remember Burnley from 1970 - 76 when I lived on Scott Park Road. Rudder and Stock

Hi Andy, You're talking money. I had similar problems and fabricated a stock our of heavy duty alloy. I also split the rudder, inserted an alloy liner, stuck the two halves together, filled with foam and sheathed with woven roving and epoxy. It seems to work OK. Launching on Friday.

Good to hear that you're ready to go The cockpit lockers should be a good place for a sensor but I would put it as far forward and as near the centre line as possible to ensure that it stay in the water. My head lining was shot at when I got the boat so I ripped it out and coated the roof with glass...

Leak - Water between the hulls, in the foam

There is a lot of pressure in the keel box when sailing so even the smallest hole lets in a fair amount of water. If you're planning to remove the keel bolt you'll need to lift the boat well clear of the trailer and make sure you have jackes ready to take the weight. I separate the main trailer fram...

Mast length & Towing

I tow mine behind a Renault Scenic. The mast is 26ft long and the distance from the bow roller to the tow hitch is 5ft. The mast extends over the car roof and behind the boat. You could lie the mast at an angle from a support on the transom to another at the tabernacle and a third at the pulpit. When...

A winters (tell)tale!

Well done, you did better than I. Just before the storms I rowed out to check my mooring and got blown up Poole Harbour and had to wade back. The next day I saw that the rope had snapped but the chain was holding. The next day the riser had parted from the sinker and the boat was floating quietly up...

Towing

Hi Bob, Check your car manual which should tell you your maximum towing weight for a braked trailer. You'll need to take boat and trailer to a weighbridge to check it out and it may pay to empty boast into car before trailing. I use a Renault Scenic 1600 which feels to be on the limit, but I only do...
