I have now greatly improved the situation by insulating the transom with a rubber car mat folded four times (ie two thicknesses each side of the transom), and not tightening the plate screws too tightly. I've just fitted a 4hp 4stroke Yamaha outboard to "Little Cracker" - it's tight fit, but just fits in ok. Trouble is there's a lot of vibration, especially at higher revs. I've fitted a folded rubber car mat under the motor, and lined the cover with carpet underfelt, both of which help a little, but...
